రచయిత మరియు సంపాదకీయ గమనిక Author and Editorial Note: Results of Graduates’ and Teachers’ MLC polls were not surprising, where the unions play an important role. There is another round of polls for MLCs, where again the strength of MLAs is the decisive factor. This space is not enough to share my insights on Andhra and Telangana, whether it was NTR’s dharna and fast that made national headlines or the times of Chenna Reddy, Vijay Bhaskar, CBN, YSR, KCR, the creation of two states, and governments thereafter. One of the recent trends is that of undoing one’s success. Whether it was the TDP in 2018-19 or YSRCP and BRS in the 2020s, what was apparent to the common citizen as well as Telugus across the country/world was not so apparent to the respective parties. There is an indication of change. Andhra has the advantage of having many towns, cities, and places that are well-known without any tag. Telangana has advantage of places with their own unique identity. While Hyderabad is important and the city’s needs will only grow, and hence the regular need for infrastructure upgrades, the crucial factor is the growth of the rest of the region, which will be decisive for INC, BRS, or any other party in terms of the mandate. At the same time, it doesn’t imply that there are no challenges in both states. Yet there is no challenge that doesn’t have any solution.

పౌరుడి గమనిక Citizen’s Note: These are still early days for governments in both states. From a citizen’s perspective, expect more collaboration between the two states with a spirit of collective growth. With heavy traffic, there is need for more pedestrian over or under bridges as suitable. With more regional roads and rail networks planned across both states, there is need for habitat corridors. Afforestation is important. Our villages are known for green fields yet they don’t deserve dumping (wherever such issue exists) of city waste near the outskirts. Therefore, eco-friendly waste management is important. While mother tongue in the curriculum as a subject in both states is welcome, rationalization of the fee structure in educational institutions (which doesn’t imply unfair treatment of teaching staff) is important. In the summer, one often comes across reports of fire accidents. As such, appropriate measures should be in place to create awareness and ensure compliance with rules to prevent such accidents.

Chhattisgarh: Elections for Local Bodies (173 out of 192): 10 Municipal Corporations , 49 Municipal Councils, 114 Town Councils

(Party-based) Polling Day for Urban local bodies: 11th February. Results: 15th February. Mode of Elections of Councillors and Mayors: Directly by the electorate. Method: EVM

(Non-party based) Polling Day for Panchayats (District Panchayat Members, Janpad Panchayat Members, Sarpanch, and Panch : 17th, 20th, and 23rd February wherever voting is required. Results: On the polling day where counting is done at the centre. on the counting centre or on the subsequent day if required to be conducted at Division HQ. District Panchayat Members: On the subsequent day at District HQ. Mode of Elections of Panchayats: Directly by the electorate. Method: Ballot Paper

लेखक और संपादकीय Author and Editorial Note: Clean sweep for BJP and reversals for INC. There was a close contest in some Nagar Palikas (Municipal Councils) though. Obviously, INC needs to do a lot of homework. Local body elections are important. These polls are likely to become more significant in future. It’s not just about winning. From a public perspective, those contesting or winning from varied professions are those who are usually from the same localities or are the ones who people may come across in the course of their daily lives and are aware of the local concerns. For parties, these people serve as the direct link with the public. Obviously, the local factors play an important role in local body elections even though we can’t really compartmentalize the mind of the voter. People are aware of developments in various levels of democracy. The trend here is of a ‘No excuse vote’. When there are representatives from different parties at various levels, there are many factors at work such as differences with regard to allocation of required resources and different priorities. Now when people vote to the same party, there is no excuse for those elected. Further, the elections to panchayats are important as well for villages have an important place in states as well as the country.

नागरिक Citizen’s Note: Elections for Durg municipal corporations have taken place. Elections in three municipal corporations in Bhilai area will be held next year. There is still time for citizen’s note. From the perspective of the state, there can be more collaboration amongst different municipal corporations on best practices. There is lot of potential for tourism development. There is always scope for improvement in law and order. The state has agriculture, manufacturing, and services. A comprehensive development policy with the local bodies can be helpful. We have expressways coming up which will pass through some of the municipal corporations. Government should consider factors such as road safety on and afforestation along these expressways.

Delhi: Legislative Assembly Elections

Number of Constituencies: 70 Polling Day: 5th February

Poll Results: 8th February

Author and Editorial Note: BJP has made a comeback after 27 years to form a government in Delhi. The onion price crisis was a factor in the defeat of the party back then. This is still fresh in the memory. Now with both Centre and UT with them, BJP has a task ahead and is in a good position to solve various matters. It’s time to review for AAAP. Delhiites will look forward to another change of guard and what the new government has to offer after the central rule, Madanlal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma led BJP governments, Shiela Dikshit led INC governments, Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi Marlena led AAAP governments amongst others. This will be the 8th Legislative Assembly. It’s the national capital (as of now) and whatever happens there is significant for the country. The nation and the world will be keenly looking at the developments.

Citizen’s Note: Safety and security for all, respect, amenities , planned growth, and fresh air to breathe. No place in India should be amongst the most polluted places in the world.
