Welcome to the Definitions Junction

పదాలు మరియు నిర్వచనాలు शब्द और परिभाषाएं Terms/Words and Definitions

Scientific terms of the fortnight and words of the fortnight are primarily knowledge based and importance whereas the word of the year is based on events and important developments (do not imply social media trends and political slugfest) in that particular year. Therefore while it is not ruled out, these terms may not necessarily be part of the shortlist for the word of the year. We are fortunate to have so many languages. From the fortnight of 30th January, we will have more than one term and word to ensure inclusion of more topics and different language families respectively. The definition will be available in two more languages other than Telugu, Hindi, and English—one each from different language families. This can help those keen to understand different terms and words with their meanings in various languages. Therefore, a language may appear more than once. Please note that definitions are copyrighted to the author. Copyright info in the website footer. Scientific terms and words will be continuous. The Heading ‘Archives’ has been done away w.e.f the last fortnight of February 2025 to prevent fragmentation. All terms are important. Habitat Corridors are going to be highly significant in the future. We need to provide safe passages to various species. Understand that lives are precious irrespective of species involved. Coming to linguistics and languages, words from other languages will find a place here once I add the description under the respective language headings in the literary junction. This is an ‘out-of-the-way effort’ in line with the motto. Definitions were earlier available on the homepage from 30th November 2024 onwards. Definitions now have an exclusive page accessible from 12th March 2025. In some cases in scientific terms, it is important to ensure the technicality. Otherwise, the endeavour is to make definitions easily understandable to all wherever feasible. This applies to words as well as scientific terms. For instance even in case of words, there are linguistic terms such as cognates and doublings among others. Hence, the endeavour. There are some standard rules that I need to ensure and satisfy myself whether it provides the intended meaning before a description appears on the site. When I focus on writing definitions, it doesn’t take much time. Book manuscripts are the priority. Forensic science has an important role in tackling various forms of crimes. It’s a coincidence that an institution in Raipur has received the national university status for forensic science, and NIT Raipur and SFSL have agreed on collaboration during the last week (17 to 23 March 2025). Think twice before indulging in any crime. When it comes to earthquake magnitudes, anything above five is more likely to be moment magnitude rather than Richter scale. It is an important term in geophysics and seismology. Obviously frequent tremors indicate an increase in seismic activity in the Indian subcontinent. However, one should go by the scientific explanations and rationales and ensure precautionary measures.. Nature is omnipresent on this site.

- 29th December: Anthropocene (noun): An era wherein human activities intertwine with the nature and cause significant impact. One of the reasons that Anthropocene is not a Geological Time scale for now is that while there has been a greater level of human activity in the recent centuries, humans have been trying to gain supremacy for long. In future, it is possible that Anthropocene may be assigned to indicate an earlier era and the present era may be known with a different name.
- 15th December: Quiescence (noun): In biology, a state wherein cells stop replicating and are in the rest mode. Quiescence can be positive as well as negative. Some cells in quiescence state may ensure protection from damage. In contrast, some cells in quiescence state may resist or evade any external influence like treatment.
